Jennifer Maxwell (Cal, ’88) is an accomplished competitive runner, mother of six children and co-creator of the PowerBar energy bars with her late husband Brian (Cal, ’75). The Maxwells are friends of the environment and renowned for philanthropic donations.
In 1983, Brian started a project to develop a nutritious, easy-to-digest food for athletes. He teamed up with his wife-to-be, Jennifer, who added her expertise as both an athlete and nutrition and food science student. In 1986, the couple founded PowerBar Inc. and began selling energy bars out of their kitchen. Many athletes fondly recall Brian and Jennifer handing out samples at local events from the trunk of their 1964 Ford Falcon. Over the next 13 years, PowerBar grew to $150 million in sales and 300 employees.
By the time the Maxwells sold the company to Nestle in 2000, PowerBar was one of the most highly respected sports brands and athletes worldwide had come to rely on the company’s products as essential to their performances. The Maxwells were widely recognized for their innovative and inspirational leadership style.
In addition to her success in business, Jennifer is renowned for philanthropic donations to her alma mater, local organizations and elementary and high schools. The Maxwells' gifts to Cal have included contributions to the Haas Pavilion, the Athletic Department's Academic Study Center, The Bancroft Library, a Faculty Chair in Maternal and Child Health in the School of Public Health, and the Maxwell Family Field. Jennifer recently created the Brian Maxwell Fellows Program at the Haas School of Business.
Throughout her career, Jennifer has stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between work and her children.
